BIG RAT .STUDIO

about us

Created in April 2020 by Molly Stredwick and Elliot Martin, BIG RAT .STUDIO was made as a response to being stuck in our houses during the pandemic. What originally started as a one-off digital show has become an ongoing project which aims to make a space for artists to share their works in a way that is more free than putting on a physical show.

Our first show ‘I MADE THIS FOR THE RAT THAT LIVES UNDER MY OVEN’ is a light hearted exhibition featuring works in a computer generated art gallery, showcasing works from artists all over the world.

Creating digital spaces for artists enables us to show their work in a way that might not be doable for the artists in real life, especially in the current climate. Disconnected from the commercial art world, we produce shows that are more interesting than just scrolling through instagram.

Since the first online exhibition, BIG RAT .STUDIO has transformed into multiple shows, an exhibition series and an instagram account full of artist takeovers and behind the scenes insights into young artists’ practices.

We have also worked with charities such as Element, a London based charity that works with young people in care and care leavers on arts projects. With Element we created end-of-project exhibitions showing works made by young people.

In 2021 we created ‘Big Rat .Studio’s Tiny Gallery, an 8x12x11 inch art gallery. Our aim with the tiny gallery is to make art exhibitions in a similar way to the digital exhibitions- a way for artists to show work in a way that is more accessible than the commercial art world.
